SAVARA RENAISSANCE
SAVARA RENAISSANCE Coffee Table Book Design Designed for the Government of Andhra Pradesh,
in association with APITCO Limited and Indian Handicrafts, Savara Renaissance is a coffee table book
celebrating the cultural heritage, indigenous art, and traditions of the Savara tribal community.
The book blends authentic tribal aesthetics with contemporary editorial design, using rich visuals,
refined typography, and earthy tones to present traditional craftsmanship in a premium,
collectible format.
About the project
Savara Renaissance is a design initiative that reimagines tribal culture as a visual narrative celebrating identity, tradition, and artistic heritage.
Rather than just documenting, Savara Renaissance interprets the cultural spirit of the Savara tribal community through visual storytelling — blending indigenous motifs with contemporary book design. The project goes beyond presenting artefacts; it curates a lived cultural experience by integrating imagery, typographic rhythm, and editorial structure that evoke the community’s ethos. In doing so, it positions tribal heritage as not only a subject of appreciation but as an active participant in design discourse, honoring tradition while making it accessible and engaging to a wider audience.
Challenges
The design had to balance authentic tribal expression with an elevated editorial language that could communicate value without exoticising the community.
Translating centuries of living culture and artistic practices into a printed medium required deep sensitivity and creative interpretation. The team faced the challenge of representing the Savara tribe’s heritage in a way that felt both genuine and sophisticated — avoiding clichés or superficial aesthetics. This meant crafting a visual and narrative design that honored the integrity of traditional symbols, rituals, and lifestyles, while presenting them through a refined, contemporary editorial format that would resonate with culturally curious readers.
